Antoninus Pius never visited Britain, unlike his predecessor Hadrian. Its ruins are less evident than those of the better-known and longer Hadrian's Wall to the south, primarily because the turf and wood wall has largely weathered away, unlike its stone-built southern predecessor.Ĭonstruction began in 142 AD at the order of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, and took about 12 years to complete. The barrier was the second of two "great walls" created by the Romans in Great Britain in the second century AD. It is thought that there was a wooden palisade on top of the turf. Security was bolstered by a deep ditch on the northern side. Lidar scans have been carried out to establish the length of the wall and the Roman distance units used. It spanned approximately 63 kilometres (39 miles) and was about 3 metres (10 feet) high and 5 metres (16 feet) wide. Built some twenty years after Hadrian's Wall to the south, and intended to supersede it, while it was garrisoned it was the northernmost frontier barrier of the Roman Empire. The Antonine Wall, known to the Romans as Vallum Antonini, was a turf fortification on stone foundations, built by the Romans across what is now the Central Belt of Scotland, between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth. It dates from circa 1250, more than a thousand years after the Walls' construction. On our last day we waited too long to get a cab to Carlisle for another 4-night stay - so once again, Sam came to the rescue taking us to the train station in Haltwhistle. This medieval map by Matthew Paris depicts both the Antonine Wall and Hadrian's Wall towards the top. We used Vallum as base and took multiple day trips - to Chesters, Sycamore Gap, Vindolanda, the Sill, with ample time to explore, learn, relax. We also ordered lunches for a few days of our stay - lovely sandwiches and again homemade desserts. Our breakfast each day was varied and delicious with homemade bread and jam and delightful tasty hot dishes. This year we planned a return trip to see "the best of Hadrian's Wall." We stayed 4 nights at Vallum and again Sam and our stay exceeded expectations. I could no longer hike, so I hopped from town to town via cab while the kids continued to hike to the end. I couldn't make it the next morning, Sam picked me up at the trail, took me to the medical center and then transported me to my next lodging. Last year we stayed one night on a through-hike. This was our second stay at Vallum Lodge Guest House. I will be returning to finish the walk in the not to distant future, and will ask to stay at Vallum Lodge.… Sam came and picked us up, drive us to Hathwhistle Hospital, then onto Hexham General Hospital - which all took a little more than two hours. Sadly, I befell a rolled ankel after starting my next leg of the walk from Steel Rigg to Chollerford, and had to return back. (Brookside Villa did offer but we did not find out till the day we left). Sam also offers washing and drying service, which we found not offered at other residences. Go and see Vindolanda, a short 10 mim bus ride from The Sill (next to Twiced Brewed). We also had a rest day here, which I stronly suggest to have halfway throug your walk. My mother and I walked from Bowness on Sloway, and here was our fourth stop. Our room was a comfortable, twin bedroom - comfortable beds hot, strong shower and the food delicious. Sam, the owner, greets you with a warm smile and asks about your day. A nice white building, ground level, with just a few step up throught the front door, where you get greeted by Branston - the adorable house greater dog with the most wagging tail ever. Just a short walk past Twice Brewed, on the right hand side of the road and behind a row of trees is Vallum Lodge. Resort Fuerteventura Origo Mare by Pierre & Vacances.
